Daddy Gets Busted
Friday, July 21, 2006
A few months ago I wrote a post entitled Because Daddy Says So about how Bush invoked the "state secrets privilege" in an attempt to close the investigation on the NSA domestic spy program. Yesterday, however, U.S. Disctrict Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker rejected Bush's request to close the investigation. I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed. My excitement that the tides are turning against Bush is tempered, however, by a concern that people have succeeded in creating a new bandwagon they can jump on without thinking about why they are jumping in the first place. United Statesians are such fickle people!

What an interesting world we live in where one can sue the government (one part of it at least) and another part of that same government will allow it to happen.

All your griping about Bush aside Bryan, if the Fed's stop your neighbor from blowing up your neighborhood because they intercepted a phone call he made to N. Korea...you'll be appreciative.

(it doesn't look like it, but that was said jokingly)

i know you said that light heartedly, but for the sake of those who might actually think along the lines of your second paragraph, i have something to say to that.

what patriotism i have for my country is for the ideal of the united states, where a healthy balance of freedom and enforced equality exists.

freedom entails a few things including the right to express one's opinions without fear of being "watched" and without fear of repercussion from the government.

as soon as this freedom is lost, we stop being the united states, and start being something else. if my neighborhood gets nuked because the government failed to snoop on my neighbor's phone calls, then that's a trade off i'm willing to make.

perhaps instead of snooping on people's phone conversations they focused on other things like *gasp* DIPLOMACY then maybe we wouldn't have to worry so much about the north koreans.

but that's what we get with a government who'd rather preemptively strike at nations than preemptively address the root of the issues that make them enemies in the first place.

Diplomacy, huh? In case you don't know how irrational Kim Jong Il is, let's pretend. You be president Bush and I'll be that guy...come'on, let's talk about something.

Zippers are overrated, much like food and safe living conditions. We must make a stand against these fruitless threats!
