best mac ad yet

Bryan recently posted about his experience upgrading to Windows Vista. I agree with his conclusion: Do not upgrade to Vista. There really isn't much of a point, unless you need Vista for work (as he does). The latest Ad from Apple highlights Vista's biggest problem: it is annoying.

  • Yeah, yeah, clever. But I just don't get the ferocious need Mac advertizers/users feel to play the passive-aggressive bullies. If Macs are sooooo mighty and good, why do they have to put PCs down in order to gain some market????

The middle aged guy vs. the hipster 20-something speaks to the hipster in me, so again clever...but is it on merit grounds, or just popular (as in pop culture) appeal?

Really, I am just wondering as I am not passionate about either product. I just need to type up my papers and play with photography, which so far my little dinky non-mac-laptop does exceedingly well.

  • I don't feel like they're "putting PC's down" so much as cleverly saying "Hey we can do everything they can do ...better."

For so long people have had the idea, and for awhile they were right, that Mac's couldn't do anything because of software limitations. That logic has been debunked. Especially now that you can dual load Windows on a Mac (and with a cool program run them flawlessly at the same time) the limits of the past no longer exist, yet the stigma remains.

Even more I kind of feel like Apple is now returning some of the punches it has been taking for years.

  • kyle,

i don't ever recall a pc ad which threw punches at macs. pc users (like myself) have certainly done their job of belittling, but honestly, macs still have not made much effort to appeal to heavy business users or programmers. if you look at the mac demographic, most of the users are actually older than 40 (http://www.mac360.com/index.php/mac360/comments/why_are_mac_users_older_than_windows_pc_users/)

  • Bryan - you haven't seen 'PC' ads because the ads would have to be from Microsoft, and they don't use television advertisement primarily. I have recently seen one ad for Vista, but just one. I did read an interview with Gates where he used some very critical words about the Mac. He even made the claim that "every day someone finds a way to break the mac." That is a bogus claim. A group (I can't find the web page) did spend an entire month finding holes in OSX but they worst thing they found only affected some systems, and the same problem was found on XP.

I also don't see how the average age of Mac users matters here. You have a point on the programmer argument, simply because Microsoft has monopolized the industry. And business users would be perfectly taken care of on OSX if they decided to switch. There are programs that would suit their needs, or they could use Parrallels and run both os's simultaneously if they needed to.

I wasn't trying to restart a debate here, just point out a funny (and accurate) commercial. I'm really ok with Apple having a smaller share of the market.

  • i love your pictures of shaye, very chic. And I really like this ad. The PC guy reminds me of Dwight on the Office.
