Dancing as a spiritual practice

I can’t say I ever thought I would type out the following sentence: For a month I spent four to five nights a week at a dance studio or park practicing with 25 other moms to perform two dances at my kids’ school.

Parents doing dances at their kids’ schools is a common occurrence here in Peru. So I naturally thought that would be the case for all of South America, but my sweet friend that lives in Brazil informed me that this is in fact NOT the case for Brazil. However, for the past 3 years I have participated in dances at Adileen and Kinney’s school.

You might be wondering why I would spend 5 nights a week for a month doing dance practice and at times I was asking myself the same question. But I do it as a way to meet other families at the school. It is one of the few opportunities that we have to get to meet and interact with other parents.

As many of you know, our kids started in a new school this year and are doing great, but it has meant starting over for all of us as far as friendships go. So… I dance! Through participating in two dances this year (one for Adileen’s class and one for Kinney’s) I was able to meet and connect with around 25 other families. We now pray for each of these connections to deepen and to open hearts to learning more about God; we are also praying for our kids to make sweet friends that will be good influences and will grow with them for the next however many years we are in Peru!

Enjoy these pictures below from the dances this year. Can you guess which two decades my dances were from? (Video available upon request)
